Mark Ellman’s new restaurant is named Frida’s Mexican Beach House inspired by the historic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo born July 6, 1907 as Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderó. I think keeping it short to Frida Kahlo worked in her favor 🙂 She was best known for her self portraits and her blue house in Mexico City. The Mexican people take great pride in her work. Frida’s approach to Mexico’s national and indigenous tradition and more so by her firm of the female experience and form.
In her work, cultural tradition was extremely important in both Mexican and indigenous (pre-Columbian) peoples of America. Frida Kahlo’s folk art style was sometimes characterized as childlike, simplistic form. Some would say her work was surreal or bizarre which Frida adamantly rejected. She believed her work reflected her reality.
Frida suffered from lifelong illnesses due to a car accident in her teens. She isolated herself recovering from her illness. Her isolation was the start of doing her famous self-portraits.
“I Paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best. I was born a bitch. I was born a painter.”
